straits times redesign

Typography is the subtle art of arranging type glyphs. Practitioners will tell you that tiny details affect how attractive and legible your text is. Space two letters just a fraction too closely together and your eyes may simply refuse to read. I kid you not.

I quite liked the old Straits Times masthead so I was quite horrified when i got home today and found an ill-advised redesign. The blue text with that orange fullstop doesn’t work.

I want them back

There were some complaints that the old design used way too many fonts. Yea, i didn’t notice either and i didn’t care until i realised that newspapers probably had to pay somebody to use their font and that such indecision was a colossal waste of money.

Their website looks alot better. (They seem to have stolen abit from Times Online)

How are they supposed to wean people off the net and onto their print edition if they are only going to let the cooler people design the online edition?

anyway, if you wanted to track all the newspaper redesigns in the world because you are in desperate need of a hobby then i recommend newsdesigner.com
